Sleep issues with newborns are definitely common. Their sleep cycles are very different from adults, so it can be tough when they sleep in short bursts, often only for 2-4 hours at a time. Here are a few tips to help you manage:
Create a Sleep Routine:
Even though newborns don’t have a strict sleep schedule, having a consistent bedtime routine (like feeding, swaddling, or gentle rocking) can help signal to your baby that it’s time to sleep.
Day/Night Confusion:
Newborns can struggle to distinguish between day and night. You can help by making daytime naps brighter and more active, while making nighttime sleep dark and quiet.
Safe Sleep Environment:
Lay your baby down on their back in a crib or bassinet, with no blankets, pillows, or stuffed animals to reduce the risk of SIDS. A firm mattress is best.
Feeding Before Sleep:
Newborns typically sleep better when their stomach is full. Try to feed your baby before you try to put them down for sleep, even if it’s just a short nap.
Sleep Training:
While newborns are too young for formal sleep training, you can start establishing healthy sleep habits early on, such as putting them down drowsy but awake, so they learn to fall asleep on their own over time.
Swaddling:
Many newborns feel more secure when swaddled, as it mimics the snugness of the womb. Just be sure to do it safely, leaving enough room for their hips to move.
